MS Squared Research Trip to Belize- Introduction

The MS Squared is a Multidisciplinary Masters Degree, offered by Texas Tech University (TTU) and  funded by the Greater Texas Foundation, is designed to train in-service middle-school math and science teachers  how to more effectively integrate math and science in the classroom.

One of the goals of this program is to provide middle-school teachers with the opportunity to be involved in scientific research.  Over past couple of summers students have been collaborating with researchers at TTU, and elsewhere, to conduct research in a variety of fields.

In July, 10 middle-school teachers, led by their intrepid professor, Dr. Mark McGinley from the Honors College and Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech, will travel to Ambergris Caye, Belize to conduct research on the effect of the Hol Chan Marine Park on the reef fish community.  We will be hosts by Dr. Ken Mattes and Maureen Gannon of the Tropical Research and Education Center (TREC) during our stay.  I have visited TREC several times while teaching my Tropical Marine Biology class and I am very excited to be returning soon.

The purpose of this blog is (1) provide a site for communication of information among trip participants as we prepare to depart and (2) to serve as a source of information for family, friends, students, and anyone else that is interested in following along with our adventure.

Welcome!!!!
